A Book They’ll Remember the Rest of Their Lives

The first objective of our projects is to compile a book from the answers to our interview questions. The second objective is to help participants realize their own strengths as they learn to appreciate the strengths of others. The interview process is the key to both.

Something very unexpected seems to happen during our projects. Everybody starts out focused on the book that they will create by the end, but somewhere along the way they start to realize that the ‘magic is in the middle’. As participants wade into the interview they report being moved and liberated by the questions. The interview seems to give people permission to have conversations that they would never have otherwise, and that’s when something remarkable happens.

People 'step up' the tone and depth of their responses and give answers appropriate to the tone and depth of the questions. Others see this and report that they feel like they are being treated with a level of respect they don’t normally receive. This is often the first time some of these people have been treated this way. As a result they too 'step up'. They probe more deeply, engage more fully, and their enthusiasm spurs on their peers. Before they know it, everyone is caught in an upward spiral of dialogue that takes their relationship to new heights. People come to understand things they never knew before. They develop a deeper respect for others and themselves, and begin to realize how much we all have in common. As one participant described it later, the interview “opens doors to relationships that are never going to close”.

All of these interviews get recorded on-line. When they’re finished the Project Administrator pushes a button and compiles a manuscript for the group’s book. We professionally publish each book in paperback, give a copy to each participant, and add the new volume electronically to our searchable Life Lesson Library where it is catalogued, indexed by topic, and cross-referenced for easy access.

On ‘Book Signing Day’ the books are presented to the cheers and tears (happy, mind you) of participants. It’s not uncommon for authors (and even their family and friends) to still be talking about their project years later!
